A Ministry of the
Diocese of Reno

Memorial Day At Our Mother of Sorrows

This Memorial Day, the holiday that seeks to pay tribute to those who gave their lives serving in the military, many of us will pay our respects by participating in events at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery.

Saturday, May 27 Boy Scout Troop, Pack and Crew 7322 from St. Albert the Great will be placing flags on the graves of veterans.

Monday, May 29,the morning’s events begin with the presentation of the colors by the Edward C. Reed High School, Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and the presentation of the memorial wreath.

Immediately following is the celebration of Mass presided by the Most Reverend Randolf Calvo, Bishop of the Diocese of Reno.

Following the Mass Bishop Calvo will bless our newest statue that of St. John Paul II and the adjacent columbarium of the same name.

As a reminder of our faith and in keeping with our mission to bury the dead here at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery the Most Reverend Randolf Calvo will commit to the All Souls Rememberance Crypt the cremated remains of some those forgotten in our society. The Church teaches that our mortal remains are to be respectfully placed, in a dignified way on consecrated ground, whenever possible. As a ministry of the Church, we look for ways to accommodate anyone wishing to fulfill this ideal, regardless of means, including those that are forgotten in our society.

Our service will conclude with the releasing of white doves which symbolizes the freeing of the spirit.

We invite the community to celebrate with us this Memorial Day.
